Fear of birds is quite a common phobia, though it’s not so well-known as fear of spiders. It is actually more troublesome than the fear of dogs or spiders. Birds are free to fly anywhere, whereas dogs are generally on a lead if you meet them in the street. And birds are much bigger than spiders, so if there’s a bird nearby you will surely notice it- especially if you have a phobia! People who suffer from fear of birds are especially upset by seagulls, because they hang around any place where people eat in public and will even snatch food from your hand if you’re not careful. Also they’re noisy, aggressive to other birds, and tend to congregate in groups. In extreme cases the fear of birds can result in full-on agoraphobia (fear of open spaces) because in any open space you’re liable to encounter birds. This is especially a problem in seaside towns and cities such as Plymouth. What does it cost?
Therapy sessions for fear of birds are £60 per session, which is about the average going rate in this area. How many sessions are needed varies from person to person, as no two people are the same. However in my experience it’s normally between three and eight sessions. We will be aiming for a permanent change in this time. This is not like seeing a hairdresser where you keep on going back on a regular basis. Once you get over a phobia there is normally no reason why you would get it back.
